Saturday was “Sanitation Saturday.” While we are not quite sure what the purpose is, our understanding is that the police restrict movement (no driving) from 7 – 10 am and people are supposed to clean up their environs. We understand that this happens on the last Saturday of each month. This is apparently the government’s attempt at keeping the city clean. The effectiveness of this cleanup is debatable. Jos is not the dirtiest city we have seen, but far from the cleanest. It is sometimes hard to differentiate between dirt and run down/poor construction. Keeping the environment clean is a noble goal and we can only hope that something comes of it.
